The original French spinner is the Mepps B1S Aglia. It is the most common lure on the planet. The Mepps Aglia has captured more trophy fish than any other lure. The Mepps Aglia is a favorite among anglers all over the world because it can capture almost any freshwater fish as well as a variety of saltwater species.
The size of the lure is crucial. Use smaller lures to capture smaller fish and larger lures to catch larger fish, according to the rule of thumb. Simple spinners have a smaller profile than dressed spinners, so they would appear to the fish to be smaller. They’re ideal for panfish and small stream trout because of this. Dressed spinners can yield larger fish, but plain spinners would more likely capture more stream trout.
Panfish (bluegills or sunfish) and small stream trout love Mepps plain treble or single hook Aglias in scale #00 or #0. They are, however, very light and necessitate a nimble rod with a light action reel spooled with light line (nothing heavier than six-pound-test). It is preferable to use a two-pound-test to four-pound-test. Larger stream trout, big bluegills, sunfish, and crappies love aglias in sizes #1 and #2. Aglias in size #2 are also great for smallmouth bass and walleye. These sizes are great for teaching kids the fundamentals of spinner fishing because they’re heavy enough to cast well with light tackle while still being small enough to catch a variety of fish.
Broad rainbow trout and steelhead, as well as coho (silver) and chinook (king) salmon, prefer Aglias in sizes #4 and # 5.
Single hook Mepps Aglias can be used almost anywhere that a single hook lure is required. They are ideal for use in Alaska.
